Myosotis Dress by Deer and Doe Pattern Review

Fabric used: White broderie anglaise. Recommended fabrics are Cottons, Chambray, Lawn, Quilting, Rayon, Viscose, Crepe, Silk, Satin, Sateen..anything summery!

How is the sizing? OK, I understand this is supposed to be a loose fit but I found it too loose and had to size down. The pattern comes in sizes EU 34 – 46 (approx. UK 6 – 14/16). Not that size inclusive.

How clear are the instructions? I found them clear, no issues.

Is it worth buying? If you don’t already have a shirt dress with gathered dress in your stash it’s definitely worth having. The neckline is lovely, the rest is pretty similar to lots of existing patterns out there.

The PDF pattern went together fine, I’m normally off by few millimetres but I find the same with other pattern companies. I went for the full on gathered version of the dress, View A in white broderie anglaise I bought in Spain. The pattern calls for 3 metres of fabric, I only had 2. The extra fabric is needed for the gathering. If you are happy with some subtle gathering, you can make it work with less than 3m.

In terms of construction, if you made dresses before this will be a fairly easy make. The collar and the front facing came together easily and I was very pleased with the fit of the sleeves. I had to make the skirt longer, I found the pattern a bit too short (I’m 165cm tall, 5’5) . The biggest challenge was all the gathering – not my favourite job! I didn’t line this dress, I wear a viscose slip instead. It will be a good beach cover up too, simply throw over the swimsuit and head to the bar (hopefully, one day).

Close up of the low key gathers and of that beautiful fabric.

I like to make classic pieces and also the latest trends, just like this dress. I think if you remove the gathered sleeves, it becomes a simple summer dress so I might do that in a few years time..if I don’t spill ketchup all over it by then!

The Jessica dress by Mimi G Style review

Fabric used: Cotton lawn (Art Gallery fabric). You could use so many different fabrics – rayon, linen, cottons…

How is the sizing? The bodice is fantastic. I was very happy with the fit, only small tweaks were required. The pattern comes in size XXS-XL.

How clear are the instructions? Very clear plus there is a YouTube sewalong.

Is it worth buying? Absolutely! At the time of writing (May 2020) this pattern is $3 but I’d recommend this pattern even if it was $12.

As mentioned above, Mimi G has a video sewalong and the dress is so easy to make I won’t go into construction too much.

There are 2 pattern pieces for the bodice front and 2 pieces for the back. This allows you to achieve better fit. There is a facing for the neckline but since my fabric was a bit sheer I lined my dress.

As you can see I changed the skirt part of the dress. Instead of gathering I went for a half circle skirt with 2 pleats in the front.

Here is Sienna pretending to do some measuring. These photos were taken before we put the floor in. My little sewing room was the first room to be renovated in the house. Not sure whether to be proud or ashamed of that statement.

I know some people might be concerned about the thin straps but nothing stops your from making them a bit wider. Talking of straps, they were quite long so make sure to pin and try the dress on first before sewing them in. I know I’m stating the obvious but I ended up unpicking as they were too long. So it’s a reminder for myself too 🙂

I absolutely love this dress and take it with me on every trip.

I would really love a classic version in black which would work all year round. It’s hard buying plain fabrics when there are so many beautiful prints calling my name but I do love a LBD. Watch this space!
